What to know before you fence in Plano

Plano's name points to flat prairie, but the city has plenty of big trees, especially around Arbor Hills and Oak Point Park and Nature Preserve. It also has one of the densest HOA maps in the region, with 161 mandatory associations on the city's registry. Start with the city rules, then check your HOA.

Plano city rules

  • Fences can be up to 8 feet tall. In the required front yard, the limit is 40 inches and at least 50% open.
  • A permit is required to build or alter a fence. Repairs up to 25% of the fence area in 12 months do not need one.
  • A new fence within 3 feet of an existing fence on the same lot means the old one comes out.
  • Wire products like chicken wire and hog wire are not allowed, and chain link must be 11 gauge or heavier.
  • Fences cannot lean more than 10 degrees, and damage of 20 square feet or more must be repaired.

Pool fences in Plano

  • Every pool, including one under construction, must be continuously enclosed.
  • Final pool approval is held until the enclosure meets the code.
  • Openings over 4 inches in a pool fence must be covered whenever repair work is not active.

Plano neighborhoods and HOAs

Large mandatory associations like Spring Ridge, Ridgeview Ranch, Deerfield and Kings Ridge each cover hundreds of homes, and the city's own fence handout tells residents to check deed restrictions. We get your HOA's fence standard in writing, size the job to it, and keep the new run in line with the rest of the block.

City rules change. We check the current requirements for your address before we quote and walk you through the permit.

The part nobody tells you

A fence does not fail because of the wood. It fails because of how it is set.

Most of North Texas sits on expansive clay that swells after rain and shrinks in the August heat. Posts set shallow get pushed a little every season, which is why so many Plano fences start leaning after a few summers, whatever they are made of. We set posts deeper than code minimum in real concrete, and the owner checks the line before the crew leaves.

Just moved in to Plano?Get the yard closed in before the dog and the kids are turned loose, built once and built right.
Old fence giving up?Leaning posts, rot or storm damage. A fence inspection tells you honestly whether it is a repair or a replacement.
Privacy, pool or resale?Taller privacy, pool-code gates or curb appeal before you list, with your HOA and Collin County city rules checked first.
