What to know before you fence in Allen

Allen grew from fewer than 2,000 people in 1970 to a large suburb, and much of its fencing went in with the 1980s through 2000s subdivisions. The town sits on Blackland Prairie clay, and with Rowlett Creek and Cottonwood Creek running through it, many lots back onto greenbelts. Both of those show up in the city's fence rules.

Allen city rules

  • Back and side yard fences can be up to 8 feet. A fence on a retaining wall can also be 8 feet, but no more than 12 feet combined.
  • Approved materials are brick, wood and wrought iron, with metal posts, metal caps and hardware. Posts go 18 inches deep in concrete.
  • Lots next to greenbelts, open space or parks need ornamental metal fencing at least 6 feet tall on those lines.
  • In the standard 3-foot drainage easement, the bottom of the fence must sit at least 3 inches above grade.
  • The city's fence guideline tells owners to check with their HOA before applying for a permit.

Pool fences in Allen

  • Pools and hot tubs must be fully enclosed by a fence or wall at least 4 feet tall.
  • Gates must be self-closing and self-latching, with the latch on the pool side at least 4.5 feet above the ground.
  • A notarized house-pool protection device certification is used at the pre-plaster inspection.

Allen neighborhoods and HOAs

Watters Crossing dates to the 1990s and has an active HOA, Twin Creeks mixes custom and production sections along greenbelts, and newer communities like Starcreek and Montgomery Farm Estates follow set design standards. That usually means a defined stain color, style and height before the city ever sees the plans. We build from the HOA's written standard and handle the greenbelt metal-fence rule where it applies.

City rules change. We check the current requirements for your address before we quote and walk you through the permit.

The part nobody tells you

A fence does not fail because of the wood. It fails because of how it is set.

Most of North Texas sits on expansive clay that swells after rain and shrinks in the August heat. Posts set shallow get pushed a little every season, which is why so many Allen fences start leaning after a few summers, whatever they are made of. We set posts deeper than code minimum in real concrete, and the owner checks the line before the crew leaves.

Just moved in to Allen?Get the yard closed in before the dog and the kids are turned loose, built once and built right.
Old fence giving up?Leaning posts, rot or storm damage. A fence inspection tells you honestly whether it is a repair or a replacement.
Privacy, pool or resale?Taller privacy, pool-code gates or curb appeal before you list, with your HOA and Collin County city rules checked first.
