Building a fence in Wylie

What to know before you fence in Wylie

About 40% of Wylie's area is water, and the city sits between Lavon Lake and Lake Ray Hubbard, so lakeside lots take open wind. Wylie also knows storm damage well: an April 2016 hailstorm damaged an estimated 80% of its homes. Those conditions are why post depth and materials matter here, and why the city code is worth a close read.

Wylie city rules

  • Rear yard and alley fences can be up to 8 feet. Side fences can be 8 feet up to the building line of the house.
  • Front yard and street-side corner fences are limited to 4 feet. Lots over one-half acre can have ornamental fencing up to 8 feet with masonry columns.
  • Ornamental fences must be at least 50% transparent.
  • A permit is required to install or change a fence. Only small repairs, such as replacing a single pole, are exempt.
  • No fences in a drainage easement unless the city engineer approves in writing.

Pool fences in Wylie

  • Every pool, including an excavation for one, must be continuously enclosed during and after construction.
  • The barrier must meet the currently adopted International Swimming Pool and Spa Code, and utility access gates do not count as part of it.

Wylie neighborhoods and HOAs

Woodbridge is a master-planned community with a golf course that crosses into Sachse and Murphy, Inspiration is a newer master-planned community near the Lake Lavon shoreline, and Kreymer East is one of the city's newer neighborhoods. Because some communities straddle city lines, we confirm which city's permit applies before anything else. Then we build to your HOA's written spec so the fence matches the rest of the street.

City rules change. We check the current requirements for your address before we quote and walk you through the permit.

The part nobody tells you

A fence does not fail because of the wood. It fails because of how it is set.

Most of North Texas sits on expansive clay that swells after rain and shrinks in the August heat. Posts set shallow get pushed a little every season, which is why so many Wylie fences start leaning after a few summers, whatever they are made of. We set posts deeper than code minimum in real concrete, and the owner checks the line before the crew leaves.

Just moved in to Wylie?Get the yard closed in before the dog and the kids are turned loose, built once and built right.
Old fence giving up?Leaning posts, rot or storm damage. A fence inspection tells you honestly whether it is a repair or a replacement.
Privacy, pool or resale?Taller privacy, pool-code gates or curb appeal before you list, with your HOA and Collin County city rules checked first.
