Good to know

Outdoor fireplaces in Dallas, what to know

A masonry outdoor fireplace is a backyard centerpiece, real stone, a real chimney, and a warm focal point. It has to be built to code on a proper footing to draw right and last. Here’s what homeowners ask.

What’s the difference between a fire pit and a fireplace?

A fire pit is open and gathers people around it; a fireplace is a taller masonry structure with a chimney that throws heat one direction and makes a dramatic focal point.

Gas or wood-burning outdoor fireplace?

Both are options. Gas is instant and clean; wood-burning gives the full experience. We build either in quality stone, brick, or stucco to match your home.

Do outdoor fireplaces need a permit?

Often yes, masonry and gas work usually require permits. We build to code and handle the details so it’s safe and approved.

What a fireplace asks of a yard

Draw and mass are what separate a fireplace from a fire pit

An outdoor fireplace is a masonry structure with a chimney, and both of those facts drive the build. It has to draw properly or it will smoke back at the people sitting in front of it, and it is heavy enough that whatever it stands on has to be built for the weight from the beginning.

  • Flue sized and heighted to drawThe relationship between the opening, the throat and the chimney height is what makes smoke go up. Get it wrong and no amount of adjusting the fire fixes it. It is the most common complaint about an outdoor fireplace and it is designed in, not tuned out.
  • A foundation built for masonryThe mass of a full fireplace is considerable and concentrated. It gets a foundation sized for that load, independent of any adjoining patio slab, so the two are free to behave differently over time.
  • Sited for prevailing windWhere it faces changes how it drafts and where the smoke goes on a normal evening. That is a siting conversation before construction, not something to discover afterwards.
  • Seating planned with the structureA fireplace is only as good as the arrangement in front of it, and the comfortable distance is further back than most people expect. Working out the seating footprint at design stage often changes the size or position of the fireplace itself, which is a much easier change to make on paper than in masonry.

Built correctly it becomes the anchor the rest of the yard arranges itself around, and it will outlast everything else out there. A fireplace is the most expensive single feature we build in a yard and the hardest to move afterwards, so it earns more design time than anything else out there. Expect us to spend longer on where it goes and which way it faces than on what it is finished in.
