What to know before you fence in University Park

University Park grew up around Southern Methodist University and has been fully built out for decades, so nearly every fence job here replaces something that was already there. Most back yards open onto an alley, and the city's rules are written around that layout.

University Park city rules

  • A permit is required for any new fence and for repairing or replacing more than 25% of any one side.
  • No fences in the front yard, past the front wall of the house. Side and rear fences can be up to 8 feet.
  • Alley fences must sit at least 2 feet from the edge of the alley, and new ones need a trash-cart inset at least 3 feet deep and 5 feet wide.
  • Allowed materials are wood, masonry, concrete, wrought iron or chain link.

Pool fences in University Park

  • Pools, spas and hot tubs need a fence or wall at least 6 feet tall, which is taller than most nearby cities require.
  • Pool gates must be single personnel gates no wider than 48 inches, self-closing and self-latching, with the latch at least 54 inches above grade.
  • Double, sliding and automated driveway gates do not count as part of the pool barrier.

University Park neighborhoods

Streets around Snider Plaza, SMU and Preston Center fall under city rules rather than HOAs, so the fence regulations and the alley layout drive most decisions. We measure the alley setback and plan the trash-cart inset before we finalize the design, and we match the height and style of the fences on either side where it makes sense.

City rules change. We check the current requirements for your address before we quote and walk you through the permit.

The part nobody tells you

A fence does not fail because of the wood. It fails because of how it is set.

Most of North Texas sits on expansive clay that swells after rain and shrinks in the August heat. Posts set shallow get pushed a little every season, which is why so many University Park fences start leaning after a few summers, whatever they are made of. We set posts deeper than code minimum in real concrete, and the owner checks the line before the crew leaves.

Just moved in to University Park?Get the yard closed in before the dog and the kids are turned loose, built once and built right.
Old fence giving up?Leaning posts, rot or storm damage. A fence inspection tells you honestly whether it is a repair or a replacement.
Privacy, pool or resale?Taller privacy, pool-code gates or curb appeal before you list, with your HOA and Dallas County city rules checked first.
