Building a fence in Richardson

What to know before you fence in Richardson

Richardson added a lot of homes in the 1950s and kept growing fast through the 1960s and 1970s, so much of the city is mid-century housing on established lots. Canyon Creek is known for mature trees, generous lots and brick ranch and split-level homes, so post holes there often have to work around established roots. Richardson's code also has some specific corner and alley rules.

Richardson city rules

  • Rear and side yard fences can be up to 8 feet, with height measured from the inside grade.
  • Front yard fences are only allowed as landscaping or a decorative screen, up to 3 feet, with building official approval.
  • Any fence over 2.5 feet needs a permit and an inspection when it is finished.
  • Where an alley meets a street, keep a 5 foot by 20 foot visibility triangle clear.
  • Fences cannot be attached to a subdivision screening wall along a street.

Pool fences in Richardson

  • Pools, spas and hot tubs over 24 inches deep need a fence or wall at least 4 feet high with openings under 4 inches.
  • Gates must be self-closing and self-latching, with the latch in the upper quarter of the gate.
  • A temporary 4 foot fence is required while the pool is under construction.

Richardson neighborhoods

Richardson is mostly established neighborhoods such as Canyon Creek, Richardson Heights, Prairie Creek Meadows and Parkview Estates, plus associations like Cottonwood Creek and Grand Estates of Breckinridge. On older lots, the first job is usually figuring out where the existing fence actually sits and how it ties into the neighbors' runs. If your street has an association, we check its standards before we design, then build to the city code and that spec.

City rules change. We check the current requirements for your address before we quote and walk you through the permit.

The part nobody tells you

A fence does not fail because of the wood. It fails because of how it is set.

Most of North Texas sits on expansive clay that swells after rain and shrinks in the August heat. Posts set shallow get pushed a little every season, which is why so many Richardson fences start leaning after a few summers, whatever they are made of. We set posts deeper than code minimum in real concrete, and the owner checks the line before the crew leaves.

Just moved in to Richardson?Get the yard closed in before the dog and the kids are turned loose, built once and built right.
Old fence giving up?Leaning posts, rot or storm damage. A fence inspection tells you honestly whether it is a repair or a replacement.
Privacy, pool or resale?Taller privacy, pool-code gates or curb appeal before you list, with your HOA and Dallas County city rules checked first.
