Building a fence in DeSoto

What to know before you fence in DeSoto

DeSoto grew from 6,617 residents in 1970 to more than 30,000 by 1990, so most of its homes and original fences date from the 1970s through the 1990s. Wood fences that age are usually past repair and ready for a full rebuild. DeSoto's fence ordinance focuses on how that rebuild is built.

DeSoto city rules

  • A permit is required to build or replace a fence.
  • Wood stockade fences need galvanized steel posts at most 8 feet apart, set in concrete footings at least 2 feet deep.
  • Three rails are bolted to the posts, and posts and rails must face inside, away from any adjacent street.
  • Barbed wire, hog wire, chicken wire and electric fences are prohibited.

DeSoto neighborhoods and HOAs

DeSoto has a handful of defined communities, including the gated Enclave at Thorntree near Thorntree Country Club, Avondale with its 113-home homeowners association, and the Estates of Briarwood with its pond and wooded trails. Outside those, many streets have no HOA and the city ordinance is the standard to meet. Where there is an association, we get its fence spec in writing and confirm approval before we pull the permit.

City rules change. We check the current requirements for your address before we quote and walk you through the permit.

The part nobody tells you

A fence does not fail because of the wood. It fails because of how it is set.

Most of North Texas sits on expansive clay that swells after rain and shrinks in the August heat. Posts set shallow get pushed a little every season, which is why so many DeSoto fences start leaning after a few summers, whatever they are made of. We set posts deeper than code minimum in real concrete, and the owner checks the line before the crew leaves.

Just moved in to DeSoto?Get the yard closed in before the dog and the kids are turned loose, built once and built right.
Old fence giving up?Leaning posts, rot or storm damage. A fence inspection tells you honestly whether it is a repair or a replacement.
Privacy, pool or resale?Taller privacy, pool-code gates or curb appeal before you list, with your HOA and Dallas County city rules checked first.
