What to know before you fence in Irving

Irving runs from the canals of Las Colinas around Lake Carolyn and the Mandalay Canal up to Valley Ranch, which sits in the Trinity River floodplain behind a levee system. Many of those lots back onto water, greenbelts or levee land, so where the fence line falls matters as much as what it is built from. Irving's fence chapter covers both.

Irving city rules

  • Rear and side yard fences can be up to 8 feet in residential zoning.
  • Front yard fences are capped at 48 inches and must be at least 50% see-through.
  • Every new or replacement fence needs a permit and a final inspection, and the contractor must be registered with the City of Irving.
  • New and replacement wood fences need metal posts. Wood posts are allowed on a replacement only when reinforced with intermediate metal posts.

Irving neighborhoods and HOAs

A large share of Irving lives under an association: Las Colinas is governed by The Las Colinas Association, Valley Ranch by the Valley Ranch Association, and Hackberry Creek and Cottonwood Valley each have their own homeowners association. Those groups typically set fence style, color and height on top of the city code. We get the association's written fence standard from you up front and build to it, so the approval and the permit line up before any posts go in.

City rules change. We check the current requirements for your address before we quote and walk you through the permit.

The part nobody tells you

A fence does not fail because of the wood. It fails because of how it is set.

Most of North Texas sits on expansive clay that swells after rain and shrinks in the August heat. Posts set shallow get pushed a little every season, which is why so many Irving fences start leaning after a few summers, whatever they are made of. We set posts deeper than code minimum in real concrete, and the owner checks the line before the crew leaves.

Just moved in to Irving?Get the yard closed in before the dog and the kids are turned loose, built once and built right.
Old fence giving up?Leaning posts, rot or storm damage. A fence inspection tells you honestly whether it is a repair or a replacement.
Privacy, pool or resale?Taller privacy, pool-code gates or curb appeal before you list, with your HOA and Dallas County city rules checked first.
