What to know before you fence in Farmers Branch

Farmers Branch was settled in the 1840s and was renamed for its rich farmland, and today it is an inner-ring suburb right on the north edge of Dallas. Many lots are older and have seen more than one fence come and go. The city is specific about what a new one can look like.

Farmers Branch city rules

  • No fences in any front yard. Rear and side yard fences can be up to 8 feet 6 inches, measured from the inside finished grade.
  • A permit is required for any fence. Repairs under 20 linear feet of the same fence in a calendar year do not need one.
  • Wood must be stained, pressure treated, painted or sealed, and the pattern must be uniform from corner post to corner post.
  • Every residential fence needs at least one gate 3 feet wide or wider toward the street.
  • Fencing inside a drainage or utility easement requires a Hold Harmless Agreement from Public Works first.

Pool fences in Farmers Branch

  • Pools, hot tubs and spas need a barrier at least 48 inches high, measured on the outside, with no opening that passes a 4-inch sphere.
  • Pedestrian gates must open outward and be self-closing and self-latching.

Farmers Branch neighborhoods and HOAs

Older neighborhoods such as Brookhaven Estates, Brookhaven Hills and Oakbrook Estates sit alongside Mercer Crossing, a 370-acre newer development with single-family homes and townhomes. In the established areas the city code does most of the deciding, while a newer community will usually have its own standards on top. Either way, we confirm what applies to your lot and get approval lined up before the old fence comes down.

City rules change. We check the current requirements for your address before we quote and walk you through the permit.

The part nobody tells you

A fence does not fail because of the wood. It fails because of how it is set.

Most of North Texas sits on expansive clay that swells after rain and shrinks in the August heat. Posts set shallow get pushed a little every season, which is why so many Farmers Branch fences start leaning after a few summers, whatever they are made of. We set posts deeper than code minimum in real concrete, and the owner checks the line before the crew leaves.

Just moved in to Farmers Branch?Get the yard closed in before the dog and the kids are turned loose, built once and built right.
Old fence giving up?Leaning posts, rot or storm damage. A fence inspection tells you honestly whether it is a repair or a replacement.
Privacy, pool or resale?Taller privacy, pool-code gates or curb appeal before you list, with your HOA and Dallas County city rules checked first.
