What to know before you fence in Coppell

Coppell went from a small farming village to a full suburb in the 1980s and 1990s after DFW Airport opened next door, so most of its homes and original fences come from that stretch. The city also has some of the strictest fence material rules in the area. Read these before you pick a style.

Coppell city rules

  • Fences can be up to 9 feet tall, measured from grade on the inside. No fences in the front yard.
  • Chain link and vinyl are not allowed. Fences must be wood, metal or wrought iron, mortared stone or brick, or composite with at least 50% wood fiber.
  • Metal posts are required, except on split rail.
  • Wood and composite must be a natural wood-stain color, and wrought iron must be black, off-white or an earth tone.
  • A permit is required, except for replacing less than 50% within six months. Pool fences, street-facing fences and changes in height, location or material always need one.

Pool fences in Coppell

  • At least 48 inches high, with no more than a 2-inch gap at grade and posts and rails on the pool side.
  • Pedestrian gates must open outward and be self-closing and self-latching. A driveway gate cannot be part of the pool barrier.

Coppell neighborhoods and HOAs

The city maps 92 HOA areas, including Riverchase, Northlake Woodlands, Coppell Greens and the Village at Cottonwood Creek, so most Coppell fences answer to an association as well as the city. Old Coppell is a historic district with its own design guidelines for fences, including limits on front-yard pickets and rear privacy fences. We work from your HOA's or the district's written standards and keep the new fence consistent with the street.

City rules change. We check the current requirements for your address before we quote and walk you through the permit.

The part nobody tells you

A fence does not fail because of the wood. It fails because of how it is set.

Most of North Texas sits on expansive clay that swells after rain and shrinks in the August heat. Posts set shallow get pushed a little every season, which is why so many Coppell fences start leaning after a few summers, whatever they are made of. We set posts deeper than code minimum in real concrete, and the owner checks the line before the crew leaves.

Just moved in to Coppell?Get the yard closed in before the dog and the kids are turned loose, built once and built right.
Old fence giving up?Leaning posts, rot or storm damage. A fence inspection tells you honestly whether it is a repair or a replacement.
Privacy, pool or resale?Taller privacy, pool-code gates or curb appeal before you list, with your HOA and Dallas County city rules checked first.
