Why Estrada

Shade with the sky still in it

Plenty of Frisco back yards get a patio and a pool long before they get any shade. A cedar pergola adds height and filtered shade over the seating area without closing in the yard, and it can frame the pool or the view from the back door.

We start with which way the patio faces, because that decides the slat spacing and the direction the top boards run. A west facing yard needs tighter spacing to cut the evening sun. Then we size the posts and beams so the frame stays square in a spring storm, set the posts in concrete and finish the wood to suit the house. On an attached pergola we tie into the house framing so the ledger stays tight as the wood moves.

  • Slat spacing set by which way the yard faces
  • Stain or paint matched to your trim
  • Ledger tied into the house framing
  • Frame sized to stay square in storms
  • Optional fan and lighting circuit

Before you build a pergola in Frisco

  • Frisco’s permit checklist groups arbors, patio covers, gazebos and similar structures together, and a pergola falls in that group. Every accessory structure needs a building permit before it is built.
  • The application asks for a plot plan with distances to all property lines and framing drawings showing the size, height, materials, post size and beam size, plus a footing detail.
  • If the pergola attaches to the house, the plans also show the brackets, bolt size and length and what they fasten to. Some subdivisions require HOA approval before the city permit.

Frisco HOAs

In master-planned Frisco communities like Phillips Creek Ranch, Starwood, Stonebriar and Newman Village, a pergola usually goes to the HOA as an exterior addition. We match the stain or paint to your trim and include the elevations the association asks for.

Common questions in Frisco

Will Frisco want a permit for my pergola?

Yes, Frisco treats a pergola like the other accessory structures on its checklist, so it goes through a building permit. Estrada draws the framing plans, files them with the city and books the inspections, and we handle the HOA package too.

How much shade does a pergola really give?

It depends on slat spacing and orientation. With top boards running the right way and spaced closer together, a pergola cuts a large share of the direct sun at the times you use the patio. It will not stop rain, which is the job of a solid patio cover.

Can I add a solid roof or shade panels later?

Often, if we plan for it now. We size the beams for the extra weight and leave room to add panels or a fabric shade, so you are not rebuilding the frame later. Tell us at the start if you think you might want it.

How do I keep a cedar pergola looking good?

Cedar left bare weathers to a silver gray, which some owners like. If you want to keep the warm color, plan on resealing it periodically, more often on the sunny side. Treated pine is usually painted or stained and gets a fresh coat when it starts to fade.
