Why Estrada

Sized to suit a wide open lot

On a 2-acre Parker lot the back yard is wide open, and there is often little between the house, the pool and the sky. A cedar pergola gives that open ground a defined outdoor room with filtered shade, and it can be built to look like part of the house.

On a large lot a thin pergola looks lost, so we size the posts and beams to the distance you see it from, usually the back windows or the pool. We set it where the view across the yard stays open, then run the top boards to block the hottest sun. Open ground lets wind build up, so the posts go in concrete and the frame is braced at the corners. We stain the wood so it reads as part of the home, not a kit added later.

  • Heavier timbers scaled to a big yard
  • Corner bracing for wind across open ground
  • Cedar or treated pine, stained to the trim
  • Placed to keep the view from the back windows
  • Beams ready for string lights or a fan

Try the shade on screen first

How much shade a pergola gives depends on its slat spacing and which way it faces. We can model it in 3D so you can compare options before anything is built.

Before you build a pergola in Parker

  • Parker requires a building permit for all accessory building construction. The code’s definition lists barns, detached garages, sheds and similar buildings without naming pergolas, so a freestanding pergola most likely falls in that group, while an attached one may be reviewed with the house. We confirm which review applies with the city first.
  • The accessory building application asks for three complete sets of construction plans, including a surveyed plot plan showing existing and proposed structures, and the permit and plans are submitted at City Hall.
  • An accessory building’s roof peak cannot be higher than the main house roof, its sidewalls are capped at 15 feet and the code limits its total area, with more than one figure depending on the section, so we confirm the limit for your lot. Lots under 2 acres are limited to one accessory building.
  • Electrical work carries its own permit fee, and every electrical contractor must register a state license with the city, which applies if the pergola gets a fan or light circuit.

Parker HOAs

Kingsbridge is a gated neighborhood of custom estates and Kings Crossing is an acreage community with mixed architecture, so a pergola in either should be planned around what the HOA expects to see. Whitestone Estates and Parker Lake Estates have their own standards as well. We stain or paint the wood to match the house trim and prepare the drawings for any HOA review before the city application.

Common questions in Parker

Does Parker need a permit for a pergola?

Most likely. Parker permits every accessory building, and a freestanding pergola probably falls in that group. We ask the city how yours will be reviewed, then prepare the plan sets and file them at City Hall.

How far from the house should a Parker pergola go?

Close enough that you will use it. Most owners get the most out of a pergola they can reach from the back door without crossing the yard in full sun. On a big lot it is tempting to set it far out, but the city’s placement rule and the walk back to the kitchen both argue for keeping it close behind the house.

Will a pergola use up what else I can build on my Parker lot?

It may. If the city reviews a freestanding pergola as an accessory building, it can count toward the outbuildings your lot is allowed, which matters if you want a barn or shop someday. An attached pergola may be handled differently. We ask the city before you choose, so the pergola does not block a later project.

Cedar or treated pine for a pergola seen from across the yard?

Cedar resists rot and insects on its own and can be left to weather to a silver gray. Treated pine is strong and takes paint well, which helps if you want it to match white or dark trim. When a pergola is seen from far away, its color usually matters more than the grain, so we decide the finish first.
