What to know before you fence in Princeton

Princeton was reported as the fastest-growing city in the country as of 2025, climbing from 17,027 residents in 2020 to an estimated 43,524. Much of that growth is new-build subdivisions along the US 380 corridor, where yards need a first fence. Princeton's code is specific about posts and materials, so start here.

Princeton city rules

  • The city FAQ allows fences up to six feet in rear and side yards, and up to 48 inches in front yards.
  • A permit is required for any new fence and for repairs or alterations to more than 20 feet of fence.
  • Wood fences must use schedule 40 steel posts buried at least two feet in concrete. Wood posts are not allowed.
  • Galvanized chain link is prohibited outside agricultural zoning. Vinyl-coated chain link up to 6 ft is allowed in SF-E, SF-SE and agricultural zones.
  • Corner lots need a 25-ft visibility clip from the property corner.

Princeton neighborhoods and HOAs

Large master-planned communities set much of the look here. Whitewing Trails covers more than 800 acres with about 2,500 homesites, and Winchester Crossing was approved for 700 single-family lots. We work from the HOA's written fence spec, check for approval before the city permit, and build on the steel posts the city requires.

City rules change. We check the current requirements for your address before we quote and walk you through the permit.

The part nobody tells you

A fence does not fail because of the wood. It fails because of how it is set.

Most of North Texas sits on expansive clay that swells after rain and shrinks in the August heat. Posts set shallow get pushed a little every season, which is why so many Princeton fences start leaning after a few summers, whatever they are made of. We set posts deeper than code minimum in real concrete, and the owner checks the line before the crew leaves.

Just moved in to Princeton?Get the yard closed in before the dog and the kids are turned loose, built once and built right.
Old fence giving up?Leaning posts, rot or storm damage. A fence inspection tells you honestly whether it is a repair or a replacement.
Privacy, pool or resale?Taller privacy, pool-code gates or curb appeal before you list, with your HOA and Collin County city rules checked first.
