Fence Repair or Replace? How to Decide

The answer usually comes down to the posts. Boards and pickets are easy to swap; posts are the fence’s foundation.

Repair if…

• Posts are still solid and plumb
• Damage is limited to a few boards, pickets, or one section
• A gate is sagging or hardware is worn
• The fence is under ~10 years old overall

Replace if…

• Multiple posts are rotted, cracked, or leaning
• You’re patching the same fence year after year
• Rot or damage spans most of the run
• You want a different material or height

The honest test

Push on the posts. If they’re firm and the fence just needs boards or a gate fix, repair. If posts wobble or lean across several sections, replacement usually costs less than chasing repairs, and it’s the chance to fix what the last installer got wrong.
