What Is the Best Time of Year to Build a Fence in Texas?

Autumn and winter are the easiest months to build in North Texas, and often the quickest to schedule. Spring is the busiest and the wettest. That said, a fence can be built in any season here, and a failing fence should not wait for a better month.

Season by season

  • Autumn: the sweet spot. Ground workable, heat gone, schedules opening up after the summer rush.
  • Winter: genuinely good here. Hard freezes are short, the ground is rarely unworkable for long, and lead times are usually shortest.
  • Spring: the busiest season and the wettest. Saturated clay is the worst condition to set posts in, so weather delays are most likely now.
  • Summer: workable but hot, and hard on new cedar. Wood dries fast, which matters if you are planning to stain.

Why wet ground matters more than cold

Setting a post in a hole that is filling with water gives you concrete cured in the wrong conditions and soil that will shrink away from it in August. Cold is an inconvenience; saturated clay is a build-quality problem. That is why we would rather move a day than pour into standing water.

If you are staining, the season decides the schedule

New cedar has to give up its moisture before it will hold a finish, so a fence built in a wet spring will not be ready to seal as quickly as one built in a dry autumn. We check the wood rather than the calendar, but the season sets expectations.

When not to wait

If a fence is leaning, a pool barrier is non-compliant, or a dog is getting out, the best time is now. Seasonal preference is for planned replacements, not for a fence that has already failed.

Common follow-up questions

Can you install a fence in winter in Dallas?

Yes, and it is one of the better times. Our freezes are short and the ground is seldom frozen hard enough to stop work for long.

Is it cheaper to build a fence in the off season?

Scheduling is usually easier and lead times shorter. Material pricing does not swing on the season the way availability does.

How soon after building can the fence be stained?

When the wood is dry enough to take it, which is a matter of months rather than weeks, and longer after a wet build. We check the wood, not the calendar.
